In this section we will look at what you need to know to setup a broadband connection.
This will cover LAN (local area network) settings, static ip address, how to change your internet settings to enable you
to get connected to the internet.
We also cover wireless router settings.
Most broadband problems can be sorted out quite easily as long as you know what settings to look for.
Here are a few things to establish before you go ahead and start to change all your broadband and internet settings on your computer.
First of all are all the cables plugged in correctly.
Check the following broadband cables.
Ethernet cable from your broadband modem or router to your computers Ethernet port.
The RJ11 cable from your broadband modem or router to the telephone socket via a broadband ADSL filter.
The RJ11 cable is smaller and thinner than your Ethernet cable and the connectors on each end of the cable look similar but are much smaller.
Power cable to the broadband modem or router.
Once you have checked all the broadband cables are correctly fitted to the router check the following.
Is the broadband modem or router switched on.
Some broadband routers have an on/off switch, make sure it is on.
If the on/off switch is on then do you have any power lights on your broadband modem or router.
Look at the ADSL light on your broadband modem or router, is the ADSL light flashing or is it solid.
By solid I mean on but not flashing.
This ADSL signal light must be solid if it is flashing you may have a problem with your telephone line and need to contact your ISP (internet service provider.)
Do you have broadband ADSL filters on ALL your telephone outlet sockets.
This is important. You must have a broadband ADSL filter on every device that is plugged into a telephone socket.
The purpose of the ADLS filters is to split your telephone line in two, one part for your voice and one part for your broadband signal.
If you have a device plugged into a telephone socket without an ADSL filter that device will take all the line thus interfering with
you broadband signal.
Have you installed the correct drivers for your broadband modem or router.
Most broadband routers do not need drivers but if you are using a broadband modem then you will most likely need to install the drivers for it.
These modem drivers should be on a CD sent to you with the modem.
Once you have checked all the above then go to the next part of our internet and broadband problems section.
